[Asia Economy Reporter Joselgina] Online video service (OTT) Wavve announced on the 29th that it will exclusively release the American HBO drama 'Watchmen' on its OTT platform.
Watchmen is a 9-episode drama that aired on HBO in October 2019. It is based on the DC Comics by Alan Moore, famous as the story writer of 'From Hell' and 'V for Vendetta.' The work, which combined a talented production team with a star-studded cast, swept 11 categories at the 72nd Emmy Awards.
This drama, which received critical and audience acclaim for addressing American political and social issues including racial discrimination, is set after the original story. It is inspired by the 'Racial Massacre (1921)' incident that occurred in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where white supremacists killed hundreds of Black people.
In 2019, in the Tulsa area where the white supremacist group Cavalry gained power, a large-scale riot and the 'White Night' incident targeting police and people of color broke out. Following this incident, the police also wore masks to avoid retaliation from the rioters and were deployed in an operation to suppress the Cavalry. The story follows Angela Abar, a Black police officer secretly operating under the codename 'Night Shift,' uncovering the truth.
Regina King, who swept the Best Supporting Actress awards at the 2019 Academy and Golden Globe Awards, plays Angela Abar, a masked police officer and an ordinary mother. The role of Ozymandias, described as the smartest person on earth, is played by renowned British actor Jeremy Irons. Don Johnson plays Police Chief Judd Crawford, who assigns secret missions to Angela, and Jean Smart portrays FBI agent Laurie Blake, who arrests masked vigilantes.
The drama Watchmen was written and executive produced by Damon Lindelof, who wrote the drama 'Lost' and the films 'Prometheus' and 'Star Trek Into Darkness,' winning Emmy and Academy Awards. Additionally, film director Nicole Kassell directed the pilot and some episodes.
Meanwhile, Wavve signed a large-scale content supply contract with HBO in the United States and has been releasing HBO series every Thursday since the 22nd. After Watchmen, it plans to exclusively release the latest series not yet introduced in Korea, such as 'Euphoria,' 'Undoing,' and 'Outsider.'
