[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] KT is joining forces with the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO) and Abicus to lead the maritime digital market, which is growing at an annual rate of 9%.
On the 28th, KT announced that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with KRISO and Abicus to challenge the global market for next-generation maritime information services and navigation equipment.
Through this MOU, the three organizations will mutually cooperate in ▲ pioneering the global market for next-generation maritime information services and navigation equipment ▲ researching, developing, and building and utilizing testbeds for core technologies related to next-generation maritime information services and navigation equipment ▲ researching and developing standard technologies related to next-generation maritime information services and navigation equipment ▲ strengthening the maritime IT ecosystem capabilities and supporting related companies’ participation in global market challenges through research and development of artificial intelligence (AI) and IT platforms. They will also collaborate in areas such as 5G, Internet of Things (IoT), big data, and autonomous navigation to lead the domestic and international maritime information services and navigation equipment markets.
According to a report by global research firm Technavio, the maritime digital market is expected to grow at a high compound annual growth rate of 9% from 2019 to 2024. It is a market anticipated to experience active digital transformation across the industry through the introduction of AI solutions such as smart ports and autonomous navigation.
Kim Jun-geun, Executive Vice President and Head of C-Level Consulting at KT’s Enterprise Division, said, “KT leads the introduction of maritime 5G based on the highest marine communication coverage among the three major telecom companies and supports the establishment of AI-based maritime platforms utilizing AI, big data, and cloud technologies,” adding, “We are growing as a DX enabler and partner for the next-generation maritime industry.”
