[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Samsung Display announced on the 28th that it has reopened the plant islands created in the Garakbawi Reservoir waterfront park near its Asan, Chungnam business site for local residents and employees.
Samsung Display created a total of six plant islands in the 35,000㎡ Garakbawi Reservoir after about six months of construction starting in January. This project began following a water resource protection agreement signed in December last year with Chungnam Province and Asan City, aiming to transform Garakbawi Reservoir into an eco-friendly habitat where various aquatic plants, fish, and birds coexist, and to enhance the reservoir's self-purification ability to improve the water quality of the downstream Gokgyocheon stream.
Samsung Display explained that with the creation of the plant islands, Garakbawi Reservoir is expected to transform into a habitat where diverse organisms, including aquatic plants, coexist. In particular, as the roots of aquatic plants grow beneath the plant islands, spawning and habitats for fish will be created, fostering a healthy underwater ecosystem and contributing to the improvement of the water quality of the downstream river.
Samsung Display renovated the existing walking trails to provide a resting space for local residents and employees. Additionally, various aquatic plants with different blooming periods, such as Iris ensata var. spontanea (samsek kkotchangpo), yellow iris (norang kkotchangpo), fan iris (buchae butggot), marsh marigold (bucheo kkot), and sweet flag (dalppuripul), were planted on top of the plant islands.
Choi Songcheon, Executive Vice President of Global Infrastructure at Samsung Display, said, "With the creation of the plant islands, Garakbawi Reservoir will serve not only as a waterfront park but also as a nature-friendly ecological learning center where parents and children can observe various flora and fauna, learn together, and communicate." He added, "We will continue to take the lead in protecting the natural ecosystem together with the local community and practice ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management."
