Kim Seo-yeong (Gyeongbuk Provincial Office), aiming to win South Korea's first medal in women's Olympic swimming, had a smooth start. On the 26th, at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics held at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre in Japan, she touched the pad in 2 minutes 11.54 seconds during the women's 200m individual medley heats. She ranked 15th out of 27 competitors overall. She secured a semifinal ticket, as the top sixteen advance. The semifinals will be held on the morning of the 27th.
The 200m individual medley consists of swimming 50 meters each in the order of butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle to determine the ranking. Kim Seo-yeong's best record in this event is 2 minutes 08.34 seconds, set when she won the gold medal at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games.
