[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyun-joo] Mixed doubles badminton players Seo Seung-jae (24, Samsung Life) and Chae Yoo-jung (26, Incheon International Airport) advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.


On the 26th, Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yoo-jung lost 0-2 (14-21, 17-21) to Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong (China) in the third match of Group A in the mixed doubles badminton group stage held at Musashino Forest Sports Plaza in Tokyo. In badminton doubles, the teams ranked 1st and 2nd in the group stage advance to the quarterfinal tournament. Having previously defeated the Netherlands and Egypt 2-1 and 2-0 respectively, Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yoo-jung finished second in Group A with 2 wins and 1 loss.


Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong, who recorded 3 wins in this competition, advanced to the quarterfinals as the top team in the group. They are the strongest mixed doubles team, having swept the World Championships in 2018 and 2019. They are also considered strong gold medal contenders in this tournament. The quarterfinal draw will be decided by a lottery after all matches conclude on the day.
