Gwangju Nam-gu Launches 'Geongangnuri-gil' Development Project in Hyangdeungje Area

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (District Mayor Kim Byeongnae) announced on the 26th that the construction project of the Hyangdeungje Health Nuri-gil, located near Bitgoeul Healthy Senior Town, will be fully underway with the goal of completion by the end of this year.

The project aims to utilize the excellent natural environment of Hyangdeungje, located within the development restriction zone, and preserve scenic resources to provide a comfortable resting space for village residents of Hyecheon District and Nodae District, as well as hospital staff and patients from Bitgoeul Senior Health Town, the Municipal Second Nursing Home, and Bitgoeul Jeonnam National University Hospital.

The Hyangdeungje Health Nuri-gil construction project was prepared following its selection in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s 2021 Development Restriction Zone Environmental Culture Project contest. It aims to prevent illegal activities within the development restriction zone and create an ecological cultural space that all residents can use sustainably.

Nam-gu is investing 1 billion KRW in the project and is currently conducting detailed design services for the construction of the Health Nuri-gil over an area of 4,800㎡ around Hyangdeungje. Construction is planned to start in September and be completed by the end of this year.

The site will feature various convenience facilities such as a deck walking trail, palm mats, pavilions, exercise equipment, and benches.

Kim Byeongnae, Mayor of Nam-gu, said, “Since the beginning of the 7th local government term, we have been doing our best to create an eco-friendly ecological space utilizing the natural environment within the development restriction zone to promote residents’ health.” He added, “We will continue to focus on environmental projects so that people can enjoy high-quality leisure activities in a pleasant natural setting.”

Meanwhile, Mayor Kim noted that most of the district’s area is designated as a greenbelt and achieved the success of securing a total project budget of 3 billion KRW by winning the Development Restriction Zone Environmental Culture Project contest for three consecutive years from 2019 to 2021, receiving 1 billion KRW annually.

The Daegolje waterfront walking trail and Bunjeoksan The Greener Nuri-gil have become healing resting places for residents, and the Hyangdeungje Health Nuri-gil is also expected to be transformed into a premium walking trail.
