[Jeongeup=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jaegil] Jeongeup City, Jeonbuk Province (Mayor Yoo Jin-seop) announced on the 26th that Shintaein Market was finally selected as the project site in the “2021 2nd Traditional Market and Shopping District Facility Modernization Project” contest hosted by Jeonbuk Province.
Shintaein Traditional Market consists of dozens of wholesale and retail stores selling various agricultural and marine products, meat, and various side dishes, but it has been pointed out that the market’s competitiveness has declined due to aging facilities.
The city will invest a total of 1 billion KRW, including 600 million KRW from the provincial government and 400 million KRW from the city’s own budget, to renovate the building’s roof facilities and access roads and improve the aging facilities.
First, with a project cost of 870 million KRW, the city will repair internal cracks in the market building and install an arcade, a rain shelter facility covering 1,480㎡.
By installing structures that block direct sunlight, snow, and rain, the plan is to enable market merchants to conduct normal business activities even in bad weather, as well as optimize the shopping environment to revitalize the depressed local economy.
With a project cost of 100 million KRW, the city also plans to renovate 2,000㎡ of access roads to create a safe and convenient environment for customers.
The facility modernization project involves installing and repairing public restrooms used by merchants and customers, shared electricity, gas, and fire facilities, customer support centers, waterproofing, painting, and rain shelters.
The city applied for the contest project in April and was finally selected after written evaluations and on-site assessments by Jeonbuk Province and experts.
Mayor Yoo Jin-seop said, “We expect the competitiveness of Shintaein Traditional Market to be greatly strengthened through this project,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to promote various facility modernization projects to develop it into a cleaner and safer traditional market.”
Meanwhile, Shintaein Market was first established in 1917 as a five-day market and currently operates with 45 stores after the construction of the current traditional market building in 2008.
It also has convenience facilities such as warehouses, rest areas, multipurpose auditoriums, and restrooms. The traded items include agricultural and livestock products, marine products, dried seafood, clothing, and miscellaneous goods. Market days are held on the 3rd, 8th, 13th, 18th, 23rd, and 28th of every month.
