Jindo-gun Installs 21 New National Point Number Plates

[Jindo＝Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Seo Young-seo] On the 26th, Jindo-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that it has completed the installation of ‘National Point Number Plates’ at 21 major hiking trails, including the Nammangsan Well-being Hiking Trail.

The ‘National Point Number’ is a coordinate system used to indicate locations in accident-prone areas such as hiking trails and island regions, where there is no way to specify the location. It helps hikers, cyclists, and others to identify their location in case of emergencies.

The entire country is divided into a grid of 10m by 10m squares, and each grid is assigned a unique code consisting of two Korean letters and eight digits.

In particular, during emergencies such as heavy rain or heavy snowfall, providing the National Point Number enables quick dispatch of emergency services like 119, allowing for early response in rescue operations.

The newly installed ‘National Point Number Plates’ are located at 21 points along the Nammangsan Well-being Hiking Trail in Uisin-myeon.

As of July, Jindo-gun has completed the installation of National Point Number Plates at a total of 184 locations, providing assistance and convenience to hikers and tourists in dealing with distress and emergency situations.

The county plans to secure additional budget annually to add and install more National Point Number Plates in hazardous areas such as hiking trails.

A representative from the Jindo-gun Civil Service Department said, “We expect that the installation of National Point Number Plates will make reporting and dispatch in emergencies easier and faster,” and added, “We will thoroughly inspect and manage the plates to do our best in protecting the precious lives and safety of tourists and residents.”
