[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Tae Yong-ho, a member of the People Power Party and former North Korean diplomat, analyzed that unlike the immediate response from North Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the anti-government protests in Cuba, the regime is not disclosing this information to its residents, indicating that it "feels burdened."
On the morning of the 26th, Tae stated on his social network service (SNS), "North Korea has issued three consecutive statements in response to the anti-government protests in Cuba, yet it has not made this information public through outlets like Rodong Sinmun or Central TV," he said.
North Korea released three consecutive statements under the name of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between the 16th and 22nd regarding the anti-government protests in Cuba. Notably, the statement on the 22nd identified the United States as the "puppet master."
Tae pointed out, "Despite such sensitive reactions, North Korea has not disclosed any news of the Cuban protests in Rodong Sinmun or Central TV, which are viewed by North Korean residents," adding, "This is quite different from the previous Hong Kong protests, where the regime publicly condemned them as riots by hostile forces through Rodong Sinmun."
He analyzed, "Although Hong Kong is under China's jurisdiction, North Korean residents are well aware that it operates under a capitalist system. However, news that economic hardships caused by COVID-19 have led to anti-government protests in a place that shares socialism and an anti-American stance with North Korea is very burdensome given the current North Korean situation."
Tae forecasted, "Currently, North Korea is acknowledging economic policy failures in official settings, and due to sanctions and COVID-19, the economic situation is very difficult. The North Korean people's desire for freedom will eventually be expressed like that of Cuban citizens, and it will be difficult for North Korea's oppressive regime to continue."
