1,252 Confirmed Cases as of 9 PM... Highest Sunday Record Expected


[Asia Economy Reporter Gong Byung-sun] On the 25th, COVID-19 confirmed cases occurred across the country. The record for the highest number of new confirmed cases on a Sunday is expected to be broken after one week.


According to the quarantine authorities, Seoul city, and other local governments, from 12 a.m. to 9 p.m. on that day, a total of 1,252 new COVID-19 confirmed cases were recorded. This is 144 fewer than the 1,396 cases recorded at the same time the previous day.


However, this is 60 more than the 1,192 cases recorded at 9 p.m. on the previous Sunday (the 18th) and the same as the final tally of 1,252 cases. Since there is still time until midnight when the count closes, the record for the highest number of confirmed cases on a Sunday is expected to be broken after one week. The number of new confirmed cases announced at 0 a.m. on the 26th is expected to be around 1,300, possibly reaching the low to mid-1,300s. On the previous day, 82 cases were added after 6 p.m.


The daily number of confirmed cases has remained in the four digits for 19 consecutive days from the 7th, when there were 1,212 cases, up to that day, and the 26th will mark the 20th day. The number of new confirmed cases from the 19th to the 25th were 1,251 → 1,278 → 1,781 → 1,842 → 1,630 → 1,629 → 1,487 respectively.


Confirmed cases were reported in all 17 cities and provinces nationwide. The number of confirmed cases by city and province on that day were Seoul 338, Gyeonggi 336, Busan 88, Gyeongnam 75, Daejeon 71, Incheon 68, Chungnam 65, Daegu 60, Gangwon 28, Chungbuk 26, Gyeongbuk and Jeonnam 22 each, Gwangju 18, Jeonbuk 15, Jeju 12, Sejong 5, and Ulsan 3.


COVID-19, which had been spreading mainly in the metropolitan area, is recently spreading to non-metropolitan areas. Looking at the regions where confirmed cases occurred on that day, the metropolitan area accounted for 742 cases, or 59.3% of the total, and non-metropolitan areas accounted for 510 cases, or 40.7%.


Looking at the recent epidemic situation, various group infections are occurring in daily life. Major cases include 12 confirmed cases among facility workers and students at a sports facility in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul. In Sasang-gu, Busan, 10 new confirmed cases have occurred since the 21st in an office, and 19 people have tested positive so far related to the duty-free shop at Jeju Airport.
