[Asia Economy Reporter Junhyung Lee] The police are reconsidering whether to disclose the identities of suspects arrested for murdering a middle school student in Jeju.

The Jeju Police Agency announced on the 24th that it will hold a personal information disclosure committee on the 26th to decide whether and to what extent to disclose the identities of A (48) and accomplice B (46), who were arrested on charges of killing the middle school son of a former cohabitant.

Earlier, on the 21st, the police stated that after reviewing the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes (Special Act) and the police agency’s personal information disclosure guidelines regarding this case, they concluded that the four conditions for disclosing personal information were not fully met, and thus it was not subject to review. The four conditions are: ▲the crime method is brutal and the case involves a specific violent crime with serious damage ▲there is sufficient evidence of the crime ▲disclosure is necessary for public interest such as guaranteeing the public’s right to know or crime prevention ▲the suspect is not a juvenile.

The police explained that the brutality of the crime method and the public interest conditions were not met at that time. However, they decided to hold another internal meeting and convene a personal information disclosure committee with external members to receive a judgment. This decision was influenced by additional evidence confirming conspiracy and premeditated crime during the investigation of the suspects, as well as increased public demand for disclosure of the suspects’ identities. The victim’s family is also reportedly demanding strong punishment for A and disclosure of personal information.

A, along with acquaintance B (46), broke into a house in Jocheon-eup, Jeju City, around 3:16 p.m. on the 18th of this month and killed D (16), the son of C, a former cohabitant living in the house. D was found dead with his hands and feet tied in the attic of the house around 10:50 p.m. on the day of the incident. C, D’s mother, who returned home from work, reported the case to the police.

It was confirmed that A stayed in the house for three hours on the day of the crime and had spread cooking oil inside the house. This has led to suspicions that A might have intended to kill C, the mother, after D and set the house on fire.

The police believe that A, harboring resentment after his relationship with C, with whom he was in a de facto marriage, broke down, killed her son D. A admitted to the charges during the police investigation, but his friend B partially denies the charges.

Meanwhile, it was confirmed that A has a criminal record of 10 offenses, including crimes committed against former lovers after breakups.
