[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Dong-guk] The Gyeongbuk Provincial Agricultural Research and Extension Services announced on the 22nd that the 'Gyeongbuk Young Farmers Drone Pest Control Team' conducted emergency control operations against rice leaf blast disease in various locations across Gyeongbuk, including Sabuldeul (Dureung-ri, Sabulguk-myeon) in Sangju City.
Recently, due to frequent shower-type monsoon rains, rice leaf blast disease began to occur mainly in fields with abundant fertilizer nutrients, and with the forecast of hot and humid weather conditions after the monsoon, measures were taken in preparation for the expected outbreak of diseases such as rice sheath blight.
Starting with the emergency control by the 'Flying Farmers' drone control team in Sangju City that day, the Gyeongbuk Young Farmers Drone Joint Control Team (a coalition of 9 organizations), consisting of 56 members, carried out pest control activities across the province.
The Gyeongbuk Young Farmers Drone Joint Control Team normally conducts pest control at the regional level, but when foreign or sudden pest outbreaks occur or when the spread of common pests raises concerns about damage, they unite to carry out joint control efforts.
Governor Lee Cheol-woo, who attended the emergency control site early in the morning, said, "Due to the impact of COVID-19, it has been difficult to find labor, and pest control is mostly done in midsummer, causing significant difficulties for elderly farmers," adding, "It is reassuring and encouraging that young people are taking the lead."
