[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Three counties in Jeonnam?Jangheung-gun, Gangjin-gun, and Haenam-gun?and four eup/myeon in Jindo-gun, Jeonnam?Jindo-eup, Gunnae-myeon, Gogeun-myeon, and Jisan-myeon?have been designated as special disaster zones.

President Moon approved the declaration of special disaster zones to support the rapid recovery and damage relief in the Jeonnam region, which suffered severe damage from heavy rains earlier this month.

President Moon urged, "As the recent heatwave has fully begun, I ask that special attention be given so that residents affected by the recent heavy rains can return to their daily lives without difficulty amid the intense heat."

The areas designated as special disaster zones are the three counties of Jangheung-gun, Gangjin-gun, and Haenam-gun in Jeonnam, and the four eup/myeon of Jindo-eup, Gunnae-myeon, Gogeun-myeon, and Jisan-myeon in Jindo-gun, Jeonnam.

When declared a special disaster zone, additional national treasury support is provided to cover part of the local government’s share of restoration costs to ensure no disruption in the restoration of damaged facilities and stabilization of residents’ lives. Furthermore, residents who suffer housing or livelihood damages in the declared areas receive disaster relief funds for livelihood support along with benefits such as electricity bill reductions.

This declaration was made after local governments’ requests, followed by a joint government damage survey to determine whether the damage exceeded the declaration threshold.
