[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Sang-hyun] Gimhae City, Gyeongnam Province, has found that the small-scale business facility installation support project, which has been promoted since 2019, has a significant effect on improving air quality.
The facility installation support project is a program that supports 90% of the installation cost when replacing or improving outdated facilities of small and medium-sized enterprises to reduce fine dust.
Since the emission standards have been strengthened from 2020, active reduction efforts such as replacing and improving outdated facilities are required to meet the new standards. Through this project, small-scale businesses can reduce the financial burden of replacing facilities and are actively participating.
Since 2019, the city has secured the largest project budget in the province, 23 billion KRW, and has installed or is installing facilities at 290 small-scale business sites.
As a result of investigating the concentration of air pollutants emitted before and after facility replacement, dust was reduced by an average of 63%, resulting in a reduction of 39 tons of dust annually at 146 business sites that replaced their facilities.
In addition, total hydrocarbons causing odors were reduced by 53%, achieving an improvement in the air environment.
Along with this, the installation of Internet of Things (IoT) measuring devices that transmit the operating status of emission and prevention facilities in real time has been made mandatory, enabling remote inspections without visiting the sites, thereby improving the efficiency of air pollution prevention and management.
Kim Tae-moon, Director of the Environment Bureau, said, "We plan to secure 3.6 billion KRW in project funds next year and continue the project. We will strive to create an administration where corporate and environmental improvements coexist by not only improving our city's air quality but also reducing the economic burden on small and medium-sized enterprises struggling due to COVID-19."
