[Asia Economy Senior Reporter Jinsoo Lee] Foreign media including Bloomberg reported on the 21st that the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Janssen, a pharmaceutical subsidiary of global pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson (J&J), is less effective in preventing the Delta variant compared to other vaccines.

Researchers at the Grossman School of Medicine at New York University in the United States revealed in a new report that the Delta variant prevention effect of the single-dose Janssen vaccine recipients is twice as low as that of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine recipients, who require two doses.

In other words, those who received the Janssen vaccine need to get a so-called "booster shot" (an additional injection to enhance or extend the vaccine's immune effect) to protect themselves from the more infectious variant.

Dr. Nathaniel Landau, a virus expert at the Grossman School of Medicine who led the investigation, explained, "This does not mean you should not get the Janssen vaccine, but that you should receive an additional dose of Janssen, Pfizer, or Moderna vaccine."

The researchers collected blood samples from 27 COVID-19 patients. Among them, 17 had already received two doses of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. The remaining 10 had received one dose of the Janssen vaccine.

Analysis of the samples showed that when exposed to the Delta variant, the antibody levels of Janssen vaccine recipients were 5 to 7 times lower. Meanwhile, those who received Pfizer or Moderna vaccines had antibody levels three times lower.

This aligns with a study result showing that the Delta variant prevention effect of the AstraZeneca vaccine, which uses the same manufacturing method as the Janssen vaccine, is only 33%.

The results of this investigation have not yet been introduced through scientific journals. However, they were posted on the biotechnology open site bioRxiv on the 19th.
