[Asia Economy Senior Reporter Jinsoo Lee] According to recent reports from local media such as the New York Post, as many as 40% of those who have died from COVID-19 in the United States were diabetes patients.
Robert Gabbay, Chief Scientific Medical Officer of the American Diabetes Association (ADA), stated, "The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately and severely impacted diabetes patients."
Dr. Gabbay commented, "At most, 10% of the U.S. population suffers from diabetes, so the fact that such a large number of diabetes patients have died from COVID-19 is a serious matter."
According to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, as of the 16th, the cumulative number of COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. stands at 608,495. This means that approximately 245,000 of those were diabetes patients.
Dr. Gabbay advised, "For diabetes patients, the probability of hospitalization and death related to COVID-19 is 6 to 12 times higher than for others. If you have diabetes, prioritize getting vaccinated as soon as possible."
