[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] It has been revealed that Naver Map's wireless data consumption is up to four times higher than that of T map.
According to the 'Navigation App Wireless Data Consumption Measurement Results' received on the 18th by independent lawmaker Yang Jeongsuk of the National Assembly Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting and Communications Committee from the Korea Communications Commission, when driving in real-time without downloading the map in the metropolitan area (Seocho-daero, Seoul to Gwonseon-gu, Suwon City, approximately 24 km), the average driving time was 48.3 minutes, and Naver Map used the most data at 15.9 megabytes (MB).
Next were Kakao Navi with 9.1 MB and T map with 6.2 MB.
In the results measured after downloading the map in advance, the average driving time was 43 minutes, with Naver Map consuming 11.5 MB, Kakao Navi 5.5 MB, and T map 3.7 MB. Naver Map's data usage was about 4.1 times that of T map.
The data usage pattern was similarly observed in measurements taken in the provinces (Cheonan Asan Station to Inju-myeon, Asan City, approximately 24 km). When driving in real-time, data consumption was 10.4 MB for Naver, 8.0 MB for Kakao, and 5.1 MB for T map, while when saving maps, consumption was 9.6 MB for Naver, 9.4 MB for Kakao, and 3.2 MB for T map.
Lawmaker Yang Jeongsuk said, "There is concern that consumers' burden will increase as many platforms that have grown through free services recently are switching to paid services," adding, "In terms of the public's right to know and saving household communication costs, the investigation of wireless data usage for widely used services should be expanded."
