[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Public officials have raised funds to express their condolences to the victims and bereaved families of the building collapse accident during the demolition of the Hakdong 4 District redevelopment site in Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City.
According to Gwangju City and Jeonnam Province on the 16th, Gwangju City recently conducted a voluntary fundraising campaign centered on senior officials at grade 5 and above, with employees at grade 6 and below also voluntarily participating, raising a total of 13.04 million KRW.
Adding to this the 10 million KRW raised by Jeonnam Province public officials and the donations from Dong-gu employees, a total of about 37 million KRW will be delivered through the Korean Red Cross.
Kim Il-yong, Director of the Gwangju City Autonomous Administration Bureau, said, “Although it is a small amount, we donated the funds with the hope of offering some comfort to the families affected by this unfortunate accident,” and added, “We will do our best in preventive inspections and prior measures for citizen safety.”
Meanwhile, on July 12, when the joint memorial altar was closed, senior city officials visited the altar to pay their respects and offered deep condolences to the bereaved families.
To prevent recurrence of safety accidents, Gwangju City plans to organize three joint inspection teams consisting of autonomous districts and safety experts. For civil complaints requiring on-site inspections, safety matters will be prioritized over other tasks, and a safety report continuous inspection system will be established and operated.
