[This Person] Why Did Yoo Deok-yeol, Dongdaemun District Mayor, Accelerate New Deal Policy Expansion, Carbon Neutrality, and Smart City?

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yoo Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun District Office, is drawing attention by accelerating carbon neutrality efforts, including reviewing the performance of projects promoted in the first half of the year and future plans to ensure the smooth implementation of the Dongdaemun-type New Deal policy in the second half of the year.

Dongdaemun District secured a total of 190 billion KRW by 2023 and established the 'Dongdaemun-type New Deal Comprehensive Plan' in the first half of this year with the determination to lay a realistic and systematic foundation for locally led New Deal policies by promoting projects such as ▲climate crisis response carbon emission zero green ▲untact and smart digital in the post-COVID-19 era ▲strengthening a solid and dense employment and social safety net.

Subsequently, Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol presided over a project report meeting on the Dongdaemun-type New Deal policy, meticulously planning the direction of each project.

Through this process, the district was selected for a total of 12 New Deal public contest projects and is actively carrying out these projects, accelerating the promotion of carbon neutrality and smart city policies in line with the government's Korean New Deal policy.

The district is conducting projects based on three major areas: green, digital, and safety net enhancement. Major projects in the Green New Deal sector include ▲installation of BIPV (Building Integrated Photovoltaics) solar power generation system at Dongdaemun District Office ▲green remodeling project for district-run daycare centers ▲installation of fine dust prevention facilities at air emission business sites, actively accelerating the realization of carbon neutrality.

Major projects in the digital sector include ▲creation of a media creation space within Dapsimni Library ▲AI and IoT support projects for the safety and health management of vulnerable elderly, preparing for the transition to a non-face-to-face and digital economy accelerated by COVID-19.

Additionally, safety net enhancement projects include the establishment of digital literacy learning centers.

Yoo Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun District, stated, “In the global crisis situation, the transition to a green and digital economy is no longer a choice but a necessity,” adding, “Our district will also secure the momentum to swiftly proceed with follow-up projects linked to the New Deal projects selected in the first half of the year in line with global trends.”
