[Asia Economy Reporter Minji Lee] Professional baseball will be suspended mid-season due to the impact of COVID-19.


On the 12th, the KBO held an emergency board meeting at the KBO headquarters in Seoul to discuss COVID-19 prevention measures and league operation plans, deciding to reschedule the games originally planned for the 13th to the 18th. The presidents of the 10 teams engaged in a heated debate for more than three hours starting at 3 p.m. before reaching this decision.


Recently, COVID-19 cases have been confirmed among players in professional baseball, causing disruptions to the games. The NC Dinos reported a total of three COVID-19 positive cases?two on the 9th and one on the 10th?and the Doosan Bears also confirmed two positive cases on the 10th.


The KBO plans to reschedule the games from the 13th to the 18th to complete all 144 scheduled games. A KBO official explained, "Because the COVID-19 situation is serious, the league will be temporarily suspended, but the games are not canceled, only postponed. There is a strong determination to complete all 144 games per team as planned."


Meanwhile, professional baseball will enter a break period for the Tokyo Olympics from the 19th until August 9th.
