[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Jeonnam Fire Headquarters (Chief Ma Jaeyoon) announced on the 12th that the number of fire incidents in the Jeonnam region in the first half of this year slightly increased compared to the same period last year, but casualties and property damage decreased.
According to the analysis of fire occurrence status by Jeonnam Fire, a total of 1,354 cases occurred, a 0.4% increase from last year (1,349 cases).
Casualties were 46 people (11 deaths, 35 injuries), a 2.1% decrease from last year’s 47 people (14 deaths, 33 injuries). Property damage amounted to 12.09 billion KRW, a decrease of about 6.24 billion KRW (34.1%) compared to the previous year.
This is attributed to the continuous implementation of special investigations for fire prevention targeting large-scale fire-vulnerable sites and fire safety consulting for related personnel.
By location of fire occurrence, non-residential facilities such as factories and warehouses accounted for 463 cases (34.2%), outdoor areas 309 cases (22.8%), residential facilities 261 cases (19.3%), and forest areas 166 cases (12.3%). There were also 17 cases of ship fires.
By cause, negligence was the most common with 800 cases (59.1%), followed by electrical causes with 263 cases (19.4%), and mechanical causes with 127 cases (9.4%).
As a result of fire prevention measures implemented from last winter (November) through this spring (May), forest fires decreased by 31 cases (15.7%) to 166 cases, and residential fires decreased by 9 cases (3.3%) to 261 cases compared to the previous year.
Chief Ma Jaeyoon said, “Based on these statistics, we will establish proactive fire prevention measures and conduct fire response training to minimize damage to residents.”
