[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Daegu police achieved significant results by cracking down on illegal motorcycles through 'team play.' The method involves checking the license plate on the rear wheel side of a moving motorcycle and informing the police in front to stop and apprehend the rider.
Daegu Police Agency announced on the 12th that it had detected 510 cases of violations, including violations of the Motor Vehicle Management Act, during the recent one-month 'TEAM Motorcycle Special Crackdown.'
TEAM motorcycle crackdown is an acronym derived from the English phrase 'Team Enforcement Aiming Motorcycle,' a catchphrase meaning that a team cracks down on illegal activities by motorcycle riders.
Police officers organized in teams check the rear license plates of passing motorcycles via radio communication and then inform the front-line officers of any violations to carry out the crackdown.
The police have been conducting crackdown activities from May 31 to June 2.
Among the violations, the most frequent were violations of the Motor Vehicle Management Act such as obscuring or not attaching license plates, totaling 226 cases, followed by violations of the Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Act (lack of mandatory insurance) with 124 cases, violations of the Road Traffic Act (unlicensed driving) with 84 cases, and others (wanted persons, illegal immigrants, drunk driving, etc.) with 36 cases.
It was found that this special crackdown helped reduce accidents.
Last June, out of 12 traffic fatal accidents, 5 were motorcycle rider fatalities. However, this year, traffic fatal accidents decreased by 58.3% to 5 cases compared to last year, and motorcycle fatal accidents especially decreased by 80% to 1 case compared to last year.
Additionally, motorcycle traffic accidents decreased by 25.9% from 143 cases last June to 106 cases this year, and the number of injured related to accidents also decreased by 27.7% from 191 last year to 138 this year.
A Daegu Police Agency official said, “We plan to expand the TEAM motorcycle special crackdown to establish traffic order for motorcycles and prevent traffic accidents.”
