'Small Stream Restoration' Contest, 14 Sites Including Seongsumulcheon in Seogwipo, Jeju Selected as Best Saengsumulcheon, Seogwipo-si, Jeju


[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 12th that it held the "Safe and Beautiful Small Stream Development Contest" and selected a total of 14 outstanding small stream maintenance project sites.


In this year's contest, projects that prioritized disaster prevention while preserving historical and cultural landscapes as much as possible, and simultaneously installed rest areas and community convenience facilities, receiving high evaluations for their eco-friendly small streams.


As a result of the evaluation, three sites?Saengsumulcheon in Seogwipo City, Jeju, Sinlicheon in Hongseong County, Chungnam, and Changgokcheon in Seongnam City, Gyeonggi?were selected as the best. Six sites?Dosimcheon in Namyangju City, Gyeonggi; Daepancheon in Iksan City, Jeonbuk; Wondangcheon in Yeongju City, Gyeongbuk; Godeuncheon in Hoengseong County, Gangwon; Gwanjakcheon in Yesan County, Chungnam; and Bongducheon in Hapcheon County, Gyeongnam?were selected as excellent.


Saengsumulcheon in Seogwipo City, Jeju, received high marks for securing flood control safety with natural stone revetments and providing leisure spaces for local residents and tourists by installing water-friendly facilities around the stream.


Sinlicheon in Hongseong County, Chungnam, improved disaster risk by maintaining small streams in frequently flooded areas, including the expansion of downstream drainage gates, and installed convenience facilities such as walking trails and rest areas, resulting in high resident satisfaction. Changgokcheon in Seongnam City, Gyeonggi, attracted attention for being developed as an ecological stream combining flood control and water-friendly functions, reflecting the characteristics of an urban stream within Wirye New Town. Local governments selected as excellent small streams will be awarded individual and institutional commendations and receive additional national funding incentives for disaster prevention projects.


Ko Gwang-wan, Director of the Prevention and Safety Policy Division, stated, "Small stream maintenance projects are essential for preventing localized flood damage and other disasters, and need to be continuously promoted. We will continue to make various efforts to ensure that local governments can sustain small stream maintenance projects in the future."
