[Test Drive] 'New MINI Convertible' Combining Stylish Looks with Driving Performance and Convenience

[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] 11,245 units. This was the number of MINI 3-Door, 5-Door, and Convertible cars sold domestically last year during the COVID-19 pandemic. MINI, loved for its unique design, has newly launched the New MINI family in Korea this year, enhancing driving performance and convenience features.

The trims have also been changed to Classic and Classic Plus. The updated trim models will be introduced sequentially in Korea. This new model features driving assistance functions, which had been pointed out as a shortcoming of MINI. Additionally, MINI Korea is celebrating the launch of the New MINI family with the slogan "We are different, but pretty good together," and is conducting a joint campaign with Starbucks Coffee Korea emphasizing joy and diversity.

On the 8th, a test drive was conducted from State Namsan in Hoehyeon-dong, Seoul, to the Starbucks Yadang Drive-Thru (DT) in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, covering a round trip of 70 km in the New MINI Convertible Cooper S.

It still strongly gives the impression of being small and cute, but changes are noticeable. The front radiator grille border now features the MINI hexagonal line, and air curtains have been installed on the sides of the front bumper. Additionally, the side now has newly designed side scuttles integrated with turn signals. At the rear, the taillights feature a Union Jack design, and the exhaust pipe is mounted at the center bottom, combining elegance and power.

The interior stands out for its sophistication and surprisingly spacious feel. Like other MINIs, the Cooper S Convertible is equipped with an 8.8-inch center display, finished in piano black high gloss. Also, different interior lighting turns on depending on the driving mode, such as Lounge or Sport, enhancing the driving pleasure. Despite its relatively small dimensions?length, width, and height of 3,875 mm, 1,725 mm, and 1,415 mm respectively?the rear seats did not feel particularly cramped.

Before the full test drive of the MINI Convertible, the roof was slightly opened. When opened about 40 cm, it switched to sunroof mode, allowing sunlight in while driving. During driving, the entire open roof could not be opened, so it was opened after stopping. According to MINI officials, for the safety of the driver and passengers, the roof opening operation is set to be possible only when driving at speeds below 30 km/h or when stopped.

True to MINI’s reputation for agile driving performance, the accelerator and brake responses were very quick. The Cooper S Convertible is equipped with a turbocharged 4-cylinder gasoline engine and a 7-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission, delivering a maximum output of 192 horsepower and a peak torque of 28.6 kg·m. While driving on the Jayuro highway, the sports mode was activated and the accelerator pressed on stretches without traffic, quickly reaching 110 km/h. Discomforts such as body shaking or shocks transmitted to the seat and waist when driving at high speed or on rough roads were much improved compared to the previous model.

Driving inconveniences have also been reduced. The Cooper S Convertible model is equipped with Driving Assistant features including High Beam Assist, Pedestrian Warning and Braking, Lane Departure Warning, and Stop & Go Active Cruise Control. The latest MINI Connected features have been introduced. Digital services using the MINI application (app) such as MINI TeleService, Intelligent Emergency Call, and Remote Service are available. Additionally, wireless Apple CarPlay is provided as standard on all New MINI family models except for the 3-Door and 5-Door Classic and Launch Pack.

The price of the New MINI (based on a 3.5% individual consumption tax) varies by trim: ▲3-Door from 33.10 million to 52.10 million KRW ▲5-Door from 34.10 million to 44.50 million KRW ▲Convertible from 43.80 million to 56.40 million KRW.
