SK Telecom Files Complaint Against Man Who Impersonated Employee and Abused Female Customer

[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] SK Telecom has filed a complaint against a man who impersonated its employee and verbally abused a female customer, prompting the police to launch an investigation.

According to industry sources and the police on the 8th, the Namdaemun Police Station in Seoul received a complaint the previous day from SK Telecom and SK Broadband against an unidentified man and is currently investigating the case.

SK Telecom and others reportedly filed the complaint on charges of obstruction of business by deception, stating that the man's actions disrupted the company's consultation and subscriber recruitment operations. The police plan to identify the man through his mobile phone number and verify the specific facts.

Earlier, on the 30th of last month, a recording file was released on an online community showing a male telemarketer verbally abusing and using harsh language toward a woman trying to end a promotional call, sparking controversy.

SK Telecom stated, "We consider the verbal abuse and insults toward the customer as interference with the telecommunications subscriber recruitment and retention operations, and thus have filed a complaint for obstruction of business by deception. Going forward, SK Telecom will firmly and strongly respond through legal measures against the sales activities of some illegal and improper sellers disrupting the telecommunications market."

They added, "Telecommunication companies never conduct sales using personal numbers other than the official representative number, and the impersonation and illegal sales activities by some sellers not only deceive many honest mobile communication retailers but also raise concerns about customer harm. Therefore, we urge consumers to be cautious."
