[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province has been honored as an excellent local government for jobs for seven consecutive years.
The province announced on the 6th that it won excellence awards in two categories, the Job Disclosure System and Excellent Projects, at the ‘2021 National Local Government Job Awards Ceremony’ hosted by the Ministry of Employment and Labor held at Hotel ICC in Daejeon.
Along with this, Gwangyang City and Gangjin County received the highest awards in the job sector, Yeosu City and Yeonggwang County received excellence awards, and Naju City and Jangseong County received special awards.
It was confirmed that not only the job projects of the province and cities/counties were recognized by the government, but also the linkage and cooperation between the province and cities/counties for job creation have been established.
Started in 2010, this awards ceremony was prepared to enhance the responsibility and autonomy of regions in job creation.
It targets all local governments nationwide and is divided into the Job Disclosure System, which evaluates the achievements of the previous year's job policies, and the excellent projects directly promoted by local governments.
The province focused all its capabilities on jobs and actively worked on attracting investment, resulting in an increase in employment rate by 0.5 percentage points, youth employment rate by 0.5 percentage points, and female employment rate by 0.3 percentage points in 2020 compared to 2019. The unemployment rate was found to have decreased by 0.2 percentage points.
As major employment indicators improved and maintained a top national ranking, the province received high scores in quantitative evaluation.
In qualitative evaluation, the local government head’s commitment to job policy implementation and key job projects were positively evaluated.
Under the direction of Governor Kim Young-rok of Jeonnam Province, the province revised the ‘Jeollanam-do Enterprise and Investment Promotion Ordinance’ to support companies with up to 100 billion KRW to create quality jobs through large-scale corporate attraction.
Efforts were also made to build infrastructure for new job creation, including the establishment of the Power Technology Education Center, Suncheonman Job World (Honam Region Vocational Experience Center), and the Job Foundation.
In particular, proactive measures against COVID-19, which has spread globally since last year, helped build a clean Jeonnam image and earned high scores.
Jeonnam’s sustainable growth engines such as the ‘Clean Jeonnam Blue Economy’ project, the Jeonnam-type win-win job model ‘Shinan 8.2GW Offshore Wind Power Complex,’ and the school meal eco-friendly agricultural product package project among five excellent projects also received favorable evaluations.
The eco-friendly agricultural product package project, a national role model, attracted attention from evaluation committee members as a pioneering job policy.
Lee Geon-seop, Head of Jeonnam Province’s Job Economy Headquarters, said, “We feel a heavy responsibility as the prolonged COVID-19 crisis continues to cause economic recession and employment crisis. We will do our best with cities and counties to stabilize employment and create jobs so that Jeonnam’s job policies become a national role model.”
