[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Incheon National University announced on the 5th that it has been selected for the "Industrial Artificial Intelligence Professional Workforce Training Project" by the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
This project has been carried out for two years since 2019 by a consortium consisting of the Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI) as the lead organization, Pohang University of Science and Technology, Korea University, Seoul National University, and Hanyang University. Starting this year, Incheon National University and Kyonggi University have newly joined, making a total of seven institutions jointly carrying out the project until 2024.
Industrial artificial intelligence refers to technologies that apply artificial intelligence (AI) to the manufacturing industry and related upstream and downstream service industries, creating new added value through the advancement of manufacturing.
The government is focusing on strengthening manufacturing competitiveness through the "Smart Factory Expansion and Advancement Strategy," which includes distributing 30,000 smart factories and training 100,000 smart manufacturing innovation professionals by next year, as well as developing new smart factory technologies utilizing the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence.
The Industrial Artificial Intelligence Professional Workforce Training Project is a program that utilizes the infrastructure of the Smart Manufacturing Innovation Center operated by KETI to train master's and doctoral level professionals specialized in industrial artificial intelligence at six universities.
Through establishing an industrial data education platform for problem-solving education in manufacturing sites, hosting smart manufacturing hackathon competitions, and developing industrial artificial intelligence curricula, the project plans to cultivate global leaders in the field of industrial artificial intelligence.
Incheon National University has designated semiconductors and logistics as specialized industries and will train manufacturing AI professionals in cooperation with companies such as VMS Solutions, RecogEye, Daeju Machinery, Moveran, and MediaGen.
Professor Kim Jaegon of the Department of Industrial Management Engineering, the research director at Incheon National University, stated, "Together with professors from the Department of Industrial Management Engineering, Graduate School of Northeast Asian Logistics, Department of Computer Engineering, and Department of Embedded Systems Engineering, we will train graduate students specialized in industrial artificial intelligence who will lead smart manufacturing innovation through the operation of specialized graduate school curricula."
