[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] The reading platform Millie’s Library announced on the 5th that it will collaborate with the Literature Translation Institute of Korea for the 5th Korean Diaspora Literature Book Report Contest.
Through this collaboration, Millie’s Library will offer all 11 e-books out of the 25 designated books selected by the Translation Institute for the contest. The Korean Diaspora Literature Book Report Contest was planned with the purpose of widely introducing Korean literature from around the world to domestic readers and fostering understanding and empathy for the history and life journey of the Korean diaspora through books.
To promote this event, Millie’s Library will curate and introduce representative works on its app, including the novel White Chrysanthemum, which deals with the tragedy of Joseon women from the perspective of a Korean-American author; Auntie Kanae and Eyes of the Diaspora, which tell stories about Zainichi Koreans; and the essay I’m Back, which focuses on overseas adoptees. The 12 books selected in the previous contest are also available on Millie’s Library.
Lee Seong-ho, team leader of the Million Books Team at Millie’s Library, said, “We are honored to participate in an event that discovers works by Koreans spread across the world and helps us understand the lives and history of overseas Koreans contained in those works,” adding, “We hope this book report contest will be an opportunity to discover works by overseas Korean authors that were previously unknown.”
Meanwhile, the book report contest will be held in two categories: adults and youth. Applications will be accepted until August 31, followed by preliminary, main, and final judging stages, with the final winners announced in October. A total of 37 winners?13 adults and 24 youths?will receive prize money totaling 17.5 million KRW. Any general reader residing in Korea or abroad can apply. Applicants must write a book report on one of the designated books and submit it through the Literature Translation Institute of Korea’s “Platform for Communication and Peace” website.
