[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Oh Hwan-joo] Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Kim San) announced on the 28th that it has been selected as the final project site in the ‘2022 Livestock Odor Improvement Contest Project’ hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, securing a project budget of 3 billion KRW.
This contest project received applications from 50 cities and counties across 12 provinces nationwide, proceeding through document evaluations by provincial offices and central evaluations by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, followed by a two-stage screening process.
The county received high evaluations in identifying problems related to livestock odor and improvement measures, and was selected as the final project site with the top score in Jeollanam-do.
In particular, this contest project focuses on livestock-dense areas and regions prone to odor complaints, providing concentrated support for odor reduction facilities and composting management facilities for manure and liquid fertilizer tailored to the conditions of livestock farms. It is expected to contribute to reducing odor complaints, maintaining cleanliness of the natural and living environment, decreasing environmental pollution, improving residents’ residential welfare, and fostering eco-friendly livestock farming.
So far, livestock farming in Muan-gun has played a pivotal role in revitalizing the local economy, but the increase in complaints due to livestock odor in livestock-dense areas near Muan International Airport and conflicts with local residents have emerged as the county’s biggest issues.
Accordingly, since April, Muan-gun has held project briefing sessions with livestock farmers and residents near Muan International Airport to gather opinions for odor improvement and prepared the contest plan. After passing the document evaluation by Jeollanam-do, the county made a final presentation including a PPT presentation and Q&A in front of about ten experts in the livestock environment field during the central evaluation by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, and was selected as the final project site.
Including the 3 billion KRW from this contest project, Muan-gun plans to comprehensively manage national and local government projects related to livestock odor and establish a comprehensive plan for livestock odor improvement throughout the county, ensuring seamless budget procurement and project implementation accordingly.
Governor Kim San said, “While our county’s livestock industry is trending toward specialization and scaling up, we are making every effort to resolve livestock odor, but we understand that there are still many practical shortcomings. We will continue to provide full policy support for livestock odor improvement, and especially focus on resolving odor issues in areas with frequent odor complaints.”
