[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyun-joo] Amid controversy over the Chosun Ilbo using an illustration reminiscent of former Minister of Justice Cho Kuk and his family in an article about prostitution, news has emerged about the current status of a middle school student who became a hot topic for hacking the 'Digital Chosun Ilbo' electronic billboard installed at the Seomyeon intersection in Busan in 2019 and leaving mocking messages.

On the 23rd, YouTuber Jin Yong-jin uploaded a video on his channel where he met the middle school student Kim, who hacked the Chosun Ilbo billboard.
Kim revealed the background of why he hacked the billboard. He said, "While chatting in a KakaoTalk open chat, I was communicating with a friend living in Busan. (My friend) posted a code that could remotely control the billboard in the open chat room, and I was so curious whether it would work or not that I tried it, and that's how it happened." Kim also added, "I didn't expect things to escalate this much."
Kim later explained that since he was a juvenile offender, he was not sent to a juvenile detention center but received protective measures 1 and 2. He explained, "Protective measure 1 involves submitting documents with a guardian to the court once a month for six months, and measure 2 is a course order, meaning instead of attending regular school classes, I had to attend 21 hours of classes elsewhere."
Kim said his future dream is to become an IT-related programmer and promised not to hack again, even as a prank.
Previously, on December 14, 2019, mocking messages appeared on an electronic billboard installed on the rooftop of a building in Bujeon-dong, Jin-gu, Busan, causing an online uproar. At the time, 14-year-old Kim was charged with violating the Information and Communications Network Act and was sent to family court.
