[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Doosan Infracore CEO Son Dong-yeon emphasized the importance of digital transformation (DT), stating that the core of future competitiveness lies in data-driven decision-making.
On the 24th, at the CTO Club's June regular meeting held at the InterContinental Hotel in Samseong-dong, Seoul, Son said, "To maintain competitiveness and profitability in a rapidly changing market, digitalization of work processes is fundamental, and data-driven decision-making is a key element," highlighting the importance of DT in the construction machinery industry. The CTO Club is a gathering of chief technology officers from major companies organized by the Korea Industrial Technology Association, where information on new industries and technological innovation trends is shared.
In his lecture, Son stated, "DT is an essential requirement to survive competition and seize new business opportunities," adding, "We are realizing the company's DT in three aspects: corporate operations, work methods, and business areas, thereby solidifying our position as an innovative company."
Son cited 'DI 360,' developed by Doosan Infracore, as an example of data-driven decision-making. DI 360 is a big data collaboration platform that integrates, connects, and analyzes data across the entire business spectrum, from research and development to production, sales, and service. It was established through a strategic partnership with Palantir, a U.S.-based big data unicorn company, in 2019. During the COVID-19 pandemic last year, when production and movement were restricted, Doosan Infracore collected and analyzed real-time operational data of construction equipment sold worldwide and market information domestically through DI 360 to respond to market demand by country.
Son also mentioned efforts to strengthen employees' digital work capabilities by supporting coding education and artificial intelligence (AI) learning community activities, fostering data agents, and sharing best practices to build a data-centric work culture. He explained, "By utilizing DI 360, we are moving away from traditional manufacturing work practices to establish a data-driven collaboration system that comprehensively analyzes and utilizes data across the value chain, creating a culture of data-centered thinking and decision-making."
Furthermore, Son emphasized the necessity of smart construction equipment and introduced various future core technologies developed by Doosan Infracore, including unmanned and automated construction equipment, automated surveying, and 5G communication-based remote control. In 2018, they succeeded in the world's first ultra-long-distance remote control of construction equipment across countries using 5G technology. In 2019, they launched 'Concept X,' an integrated unmanned automation control solution for construction sites, and shared their experience of achieving the world's first full unmanned operation process by analyzing data from drone-based terrain surveys and operating unmanned construction equipment such as excavators and wheel loaders.
Son stated, "Going forward, we plan to solidify our position as a global leader by providing various smart construction machinery products and services that combine machine control technology and AI, as well as accelerating the development of hybrid powertrain and electrification technologies."
