[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] “Major countries overseas have already begun preparing for 6G, so we must swiftly develop core technologies and secure standardization to gain leadership in the global market.”
On the 23rd, Minister Hyesook Lim of the Ministry of Science and ICT stated at the 'Public-Private Joint 6G Strategy Meeting' held at the Conrad Hotel in Yeouido, Seoul, “Next-generation communication networks are key technologies that accelerate the digital transformation, and their importance is so great that steady efforts over a long period are required more than in any other field,” emphasizing the importance of securing 6G technology leadership.
She added, “Fortunately, we achieved the world's first commercialization of 5G in 2019, resulting in enhanced competitiveness of the domestic equipment industry. We also have the strength of being recognized by overseas evaluation agencies for excellence in 5G penetration rate and service quality,” and said, “Based on this experience, the government plans to establish a 6G R&D implementation plan and begin full-scale execution from this year to maintain our digital superiority in the upcoming terrestrial era and enable virtuous cycles across all industries.”
To this end, the government will concentrate approximately 200 billion KRW in investment by 2025 in fundamental technology development in areas where private investment is difficult, such as low-earth orbit communication satellites and ultra-precise network technologies, and plans to promote international standard and patent leadership through active exchanges and cooperation with major countries and international standardization organizations.
Minister Lim said, “Efforts to secure leadership in 6G are ongoing,” and added, “Based on the outcomes of the recent Korea-US summit, a joint research project involving the US National Science Foundation and our Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation will be officially launched this year to enhance mutual technological capabilities through strategic cooperation between the two countries.”
At the strategy meeting, measures to expand exchanges such as joint research in the 6G field between the two countries utilizing the outcomes of last month’s Korea-US summit were discussed. To this end, the Institute for Information & Communications Technology Planning & Evaluation (IITP) and the US National Science Foundation (NSF) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on joint research cooperation and decided to actively promote joint research in the 6G field between the two countries starting this year.
The Ministry of Science and ICT held the public-private joint 6G strategy meeting on this day and established the ‘6G Research and Development (R&D) Implementation Plan.’ The 6G R&D implementation plan discussed includes detailed execution plans for ▲ securing next-generation core fundamental technologies ▲ leading international standards and patents ▲ building research and industrial infrastructure.
