[Asia Economy Reporter Park Cheol-eung] Song Young-gil, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, emphasized the scrutiny of former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol's wife, likening it to "not allowing incomplete sales."
On the 23rd, Song appeared on TBS Radio's 'Kim Eo-jun's News Factory' and mentioned, "The first trial verdict for the mother-in-law of former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol is expected next month on the 2nd." He added, "So far, all of her business partners have been detained, but she herself has avoided prosecution until now, and this is the first time she has been indicted. The reason why issues related to the wife are important is that among elected officials, only the president's spouse holds a legal status and receives national budget support."
He continued, "Even the wives of ministers or members of the National Assembly face issues if they travel together, but the president's spouse has full legal status and is backed by budget support. Therefore, the verification of the president's wife or prospective spouse is as important as that of the president. National-level scrutiny is necessary."
Song also said, "Even when selling insurance products, if explanations are not properly given, it is considered incomplete sales and can be grounds for cancellation," adding, "If this applies to insurance products, then a person aspiring to be president must not violate the duty to explain or engage in incomplete sales. They have an obligation to provide thorough explanations."
Regarding the so-called X-file controversy, he said, "We are accumulating verification materials," and stated that it is unrelated to what Jang Sung-chul, director of the 'Sympathy and Debate' Policy Center, mentioned. Song said, "I have nothing like that, and I am organizing things on my own," and added, "The X-file mentioned by Director Jang is probably internal, and it is presumed that various materials were compiled within the opposition party during the personnel verification process for the Prosecutor General."
When asked if this was due to a fight between the mainstream and non-mainstream factions of the conservative opposition party, he replied, "Yes. Candidate Hong Joon-pyo will likely join the party, and he probably knows best. Since he is a junior prosecutor and knows everything that happened last summer, Candidate Hong is the person who knows best."
Regarding the Democratic Party's presidential primary schedule, he said, "At yesterday's (lawmakers' meeting) discussion, the number of lawmakers favoring postponement was slightly higher," but added, "However, public opinion polls overwhelmingly support proceeding as scheduled."
The Democratic Party plans to hold another Supreme Council meeting on the 25th to decide whether to postpone the primary schedule.
