'Listening to Security Field Stories in Border Areas'... 2021 Gyeonggi Peace and Security Forum Held

[Asia Economy Reporter La Young-cheol] To mark the 71st anniversary of the Korean War, the "2021 Gyeonggi Peace and Security Forum," which examines the present and future of security policies at the local government level with the country's top experts in peace and security, will be held on the 25th.

According to Gyeonggi Province on the 23rd, this forum is held to establish a new paradigm for security policies at the local government level amid a turning point in the concept of security, expanding from the traditional security areas of politics, military, and diplomacy to people-centered and daily safety issues such as health, environment, cyber, and energy.

Under the theme of "People-Centered Security," the forum will take place at the Peace Nuri Hall in the Northern Government Complex of Gyeonggi Provincial Office. Former Minister of Unification Lee Jong-seok will deliver the keynote speech, and former Sejong Institute Director Baek Hak-soon will serve as the chairperson.

Following this, Jo Kyung-hwan, a member of the Presidential Policy Planning Committee, will present on "Human Security and the Rediscovery of Local Governments," Kim Dong-yeop, professor at the University of North Korean Studies, on "The Role of Local Governments in Demining the Civilian Control Line," and Choi Byung-wook, professor at Sangmyung University, on "Establishing Sustainable Security Governance in Border Areas."

Based on the presentations, a comprehensive discussion will be held with Professor Kim In-han of Ewha Womans University, Professor Jeong Han-beom of the Korea National Defense University, university students, residents affected by illegal leaflet distribution, and other participants and netizens to hear vivid stories from the security field and discuss new security policy directions considering the characteristics of Gyeonggi Province’s border areas.

Lee Han-gyu, Deputy Governor for Administration of Gyeonggi Province, said, "This forum is a place where the country’s top experts and residents of border areas, who experience security situations firsthand at the northernmost point, come together," adding, "We will create a time to contemplate new security policy directions at the local government level that can realize the values of peace, harmony, and coexistence."

Anyone interested in security can participate in the forum on the 25th from 10 a.m. via the YouTube channel "Gyeonggi Peace and Security Forum."
