[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] On the 22nd, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that it will conduct joint safety inspections with autonomous districts and external experts at 67 demolition sites adjacent to public facilities such as roads and bus stops.
This intensive inspection will be conducted over five weeks from the 28th of this month to the 30th of next month. Participants include the Seoul Regional Building Safety Center, autonomous district Building Safety Centers, external experts (structural and construction engineers), and city and district inspection teams.
The city will check items such as demolition construction design, mandatory on-site presence of representatives and supervisors, installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV), and issues revealed by the collapse accident of a demolished building in Dong-gu, Gwangju, which occurred on the 9th.
If any hazards are found, the city plans to immediately issue a work stoppage order and only allow construction to resume after confirming safety measures.
This inspection is conducted separately from the full inspection of 359 demolition sites by autonomous districts starting from the 14th and the special inspection by the Seoul Housing Maintenance Division, which reviews contracts for 16 large-scale demolition projects such as redevelopment and reconstruction starting from the 21st.
Kim Seong-bo, head of the Seoul Housing and Architecture Headquarters, said, "To prevent accidents at demolition sites, it is most important that site managers and supervisors carry out safe demolition methods and comply with safety regulations," adding that they will continue to conduct inspections.
