No More Worries Even When It Rains Now
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Suncheon City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Heo Seok) announced on the 21st that it has completed the Namjeong District stormwater detention facility to prevent flooding in the Inje and Pungdeok-dong areas, which were habitual flood zones due to heavy summer rains, and held a completion ceremony on the 18th.
The Pungdeok-dong and Namje-dong areas are geographically prone to flooding during heavy summer rains, frequently causing property damage. To resolve this, since January 2019, a project with a total budget of 23.7 billion KRW has been underway to install a detention basin with a storage capacity of 22,400 tons underground on a 3,118㎡ site. The project, which took two and a half years, has now been completed.
The detention facility is designed to store water underground by directing it to lower areas when signs of urban flooding appear during rainfall. On top of the detention basin, a children's park was created, and to alleviate chronic parking shortages in the lower market area, 66 parking spaces and restrooms were installed, enhancing daily convenience for citizens.
The city established a flood damage reduction plan in March 2015 and has completed five detention basins in habitual flood zones including Deokam-dong, Dongoe-dong, Seongdong Rotary, Jogok-dong, and Namjeong-dong to date.
A city official stated, “By completing the Jangcheon detention basin by 2023, we will achieve zero urban flooding and create a city where citizen safety is the top priority, making Suncheon a city strong in safety.”
