[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] The Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee announced that the spectator limit for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic venues, opening on the 23rd of next month, has been finalized at 10,000. Despite the ongoing severe COVID-19 situation and opposition both domestically and internationally, the final decision to allow spectators is expected to spark significant controversy.
According to NHK on the 21st, the Japanese government, Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Organizing Committee, International Olympic Committee (IOC), and International Paralympic Committee (IPC), among other related Tokyo Olympic organizations, announced during a five-party online meeting held that afternoon that the spectator limit for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games has been officially set at 50% of the venue capacity, with a maximum of 10,000 spectators.
According to this principle, if a venue has a capacity of 10,000, up to 5,000 spectators are allowed; if the capacity is 20,000, up to 10,000 spectators are allowed. For venues with a capacity exceeding 20,000, the maximum number of spectators allowed will be capped at 10,000.
