[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] The Korea Post and the National Courier Workers' Union Post Office Headquarters, which had failed to reach an agreement on improving the working conditions of courier workers, have reached a social agreement on measures to prevent death from overwork.
According to the Korea Post and the union on the 18th, the Korea Post and the Courier Workers' Death from Overwork Countermeasures Committee met this morning and agreed on issues related to sorting work.
According to the agreement, post office consigned delivery workers will be excluded from courier sorting work starting January 1 next year. For the sorting work fees performed before the exclusion, prior consulting will be received from the Board of Audit and Inspection.
If no conclusion is reached during the prior consulting, the Korea Post and the Courier Workers' Union will each recommend two law firms to prepare legal review opinions, which will be discussed in a permanent consultative body.
Earlier, on the 16th of this month, the courier industry, excluding the post office courier union, proposed a provisional agreement to completely exclude courier drivers from sorting work starting next year and to limit the average weekly working hours to no more than 60 hours. At that time, the post office courier union failed to reach an agreement due to differences with the Korea Post.
The courier industry labor and management are expected to hold a signing ceremony next week and announce the final agreement.
