[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The police have launched a full-scale investigation into illegal activities that occurred during a large-scale rally organized by the National Courier Workers' Union (Courier Union).
On the 17th, the Yeongdeungpo Police Station in Seoul announced that it had sent summonses to Jin Kyung-jun, the chairman of the Courier Union, along with five other union executives.
They are suspected of holding a large-scale unauthorized illegal rally and violating quarantine rules over two days starting from the 15th around Yeouido Park in Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul. Approximately 4,000 union members who came from all over the country stayed overnight in the park for two days, demanding measures against overwork deaths of courier workers and the implementation of social agreements.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government issued an administrative order banning the rally and filed a complaint with the police against the rally organizers the day before. The Yeongdeungpo Police Station formed a dedicated investigation team consisting of 16 members.
Earlier, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency stated, "We will strictly respond by forming a dedicated investigation team for illegal acts that endanger the community, and by working jointly with quarantine authorities to consider multifaceted judicial and administrative measures in accordance with laws and principles."
