Four Hwanil High School Students Who Prevented Han River Jumping Selected as First 'Righteous Citizens at Disaster Sites' This Year... Mayor Oh Se-hoon Presents Commendation Four high school students from Hwanil High School in Seoul prevented a man in his 20s from jumping near the north end of Mapo Bridge in Seoul on the morning of May 1, and they are assisting the police and rescue efforts.

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Four high school students who saved the life of a citizen attempting to jump off Mapo Bridge, a chicken restaurant owner who generously gave free chicken to hungry brothers, and a nurse who performed CPR on a cardiac arrest passenger at a subway station on her way home will receive commendations from the Mayor of Seoul.

On the 18th, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon visited Hwanil High School to select four third-year high school students who saved a citizen's life as this year's first "Righteous Citizens at Disaster Scenes" and awarded them mayoral commendations. Considering that they are third-year students preparing for exams, Mayor Oh visited the school directly so as not to interfere with their studies.

These Hwanil High School students witnessed a man precariously hanging on the railing of Mapo Bridge while taking a walk along the Han River on the 1st of last month and ran to him without hesitation. Although it was a dangerous situation where the man could have fallen into the river, the students united with the sole determination to save him and were ultimately able to save a precious life.

A nurse who saved a life by providing emergency care to a cardiac arrest passenger also received a "Righteous Citizen at Disaster Scenes" mayoral commendation. Nurse Kwon Young-sun of Seoul Red Cross Hospital found a passenger who had lost consciousness and collapsed on the platform at Gayang Station on the subway on May 11th while on her way home. Nurse Kwon performed CPR during the golden time before 119 arrived, thanks to which the patient regained consciousness.

Additionally, Park Jae-hwi, who runs a chicken restaurant in Mapo, received a mayoral commendation for "Meritorious Service in the Food Sector." Park gave free chicken to brothers who desperately wanted to eat chicken but only had 5,000 won on hand. After the brothers' story became known, a nationwide wave of orders from citizens wanting to give a so-called "Donzzul (money + punishment)" followed. Park also donated 6 million won, supplemented from his own pocket, to the Mapo District Office from the proceeds.

A Seoul city official explained, "Despite the difficulty of paying attention to others due to social distancing caused by COVID-19, we awarded mayoral commendations to citizens who brought warm kindness to society."
