[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] Former national soccer player Park Ji-sung (40), chairman of the JS Foundation, has filed a complaint with the police against netizens who left malicious comments regarding his inability to pay respects at the funeral of the late Yoo Sang-chul, former Incheon United coach.
According to the police on the 17th, Chairman Park filed complaints the day before at the Seocho Police Station in Seoul against multiple commenters and post writers for violating the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection (defamation).
Park’s agency, Etoile Classic, stated in a notice sent to reporters that "Chairman Park resides in London, UK, and was unable to attend the funeral. In response, malicious speculation and violent expressions about Chairman Park and his family were posted online, and even the YouTube channel run by Park’s wife, former announcer Kim Min-ji, was flooded with abusive language. There will be no leniency in eradicating such excessive malicious comments."
They continued, "Immediately after hearing the obituary, Chairman Park’s father, on behalf of Park who lives in the UK, visited the funeral to express condolences, and Chairman Park also contacted the bereaved family to share in their grief. At that time, out of the deep sorrow of losing a respected senior and fellow soccer player, Chairman Park felt it was not important to announce whether he would express his condolences, so no separate statement was made. However, due to ongoing speculation that might cause harm even to the deceased, we clarify our position to prevent misunderstandings."
Former coach Yoo passed away on the 7th of this month at the age of 50 after battling pancreatic cancer.
