Yonsei University, Which Failed Midterm Evaluation, Did Not Pass Re-evaluation
First Round of Funding Scheduled for Early July
In 2021, 75 universities were selected for the University Contribution to High School Education Support Project. [Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The Ministry of Education has selected 75 universities to participate in the 2021 University Support Project for Contributing to High School Education. Korea University, which failed the mid-term evaluation, passed an additional evaluation and will receive support this year as well.
On the 17th, the Ministry of Education confirmed 73 existing supported universities in the mid-term evaluation conducted in May and conducted an additional evaluation to select Korea University and Sungshin Women's University. Two universities that failed the mid-term evaluation and four newly applying universities participated in the additional evaluation.
Korea University, which failed the mid-term evaluation, passed the additional selection evaluation, but Yonsei University was eliminated. Previously, the Ministry of Education applied penalty points to Korea University and Yonsei University for falsifying information in their project applications. Both universities were penalized for falsely reporting admissions officer training details in their project plans from 2017 to 2019.
The Ministry of Education stated, "The evaluation focused on the 2021 project operation plans and the 2022-2023 academic year college admission implementation plans of the applying universities. After deliberation by the project steering committee, the top two universities based on evaluation scores were finally selected."
The additional evaluation was conducted under the same criteria as the mid-term evaluation, including ▲ securing fairness and transparency in college admissions ▲ efforts to reduce examinee burden through simplification of admission structures and information disclosure ▲ compliance with social responsibility such as operating social integration admissions (recommended recruitment quota of 10% or more).
The University Support Project for Contributing to High School Education is a two-year project running from last year through this year. The Ministry of Education plans to finalize the supported universities after receiving objections from the 16th to the 25th.
The 2021 support funds for each of the 75 finally selected universities were determined comprehensively considering the number of admissions officers and evaluation results, through deliberation by the project steering committee. The Ministry of Education plans to disburse the first installment of support funds (around 70% of the total amount) around the first week of July.
An official from the Ministry of Education explained, "The additionally selected universities operated the student record comprehensive admissions simply and scored high on indicators such as adopting multiple admissions officers or multi-stage screening. As university admissions have become more standardized at a higher level, the competition for final selection evaluation was intense."
