[Asia Economy Military Specialist Yang Nak-gyu] A soldier who left malicious comments on articles related to President Moon Jae-in was found guilty of insulting a superior officer. This is the first time under the current administration that an active-duty soldier has received a guilty verdict for insulting the military commander-in-chief, also known as a superior officer.
According to the Army on the 16th, Private A posted a comment saying "Moon XX impeachment" on articles about a Gwanghwamun rally for President Moon's impeachment held on social networks (SNS) in July and December last year using a smartphone. Additionally, on an article stating that the military would be deployed for epidemiological investigations, he posted comments such as "He should be X, Moon XX XXX, getting worse."
These comments were reported through the National Petition System as a general complaint after being seen outside the military, and the military police conducted an investigation. It is reported that Private A has not appealed.
The Army Ordinary Military Court on the 3rd sentenced the soldier who posted two comments on articles related to President Moon in July and December last year to six months in prison with a suspended sentence. A suspended sentence is a system where the sentencing of a minor crime is postponed for a certain period, and if no specific incidents occur during that period, the sentence is waived.
