[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The court has extended the detention period by two more months for Professor Jeong Gyeongshim of Dongyang University, who was sentenced to prison in the first trial and detained in court on charges including admission bribery for her children and illegal investment in private equity funds.

According to the legal community on the 16th, the Criminal Division 1-2 of the Seoul High Court (Presiding Judge Eom Sangpil) decided to renew Professor Jeong's detention period on the 14th. Professor Jeong, whose detention was scheduled to expire on the 22nd, will now have her detention extended until August.

Previously, during the first trial last year, Professor Jeong was released after serving the full detention period but was re-detained in court after being sentenced to prison. In the first trial, she was sentenced to 4 years in prison and fined 500 million won.

The appellate court had announced in the last hearing that it would conclude the trial next month. Accordingly, the sentencing date is expected to be set around late July or August, and it is anticipated that Professor Jeong will face the second trial sentencing while still in detention.
