Namhae Seomyeon~Yeosu Sangam-dong Connection 7.31km Preliminary Feasibility Study Underway, Final Decision in July
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Saeyan] The Namhae-Yeosu Undersea Tunnel has been selected as a project subject to the five-year preliminary feasibility study plan, but it has been repeatedly canceled due to low economic feasibility.
So far, the project has been somewhat recognized for regional balance and policy aspects, but it lacked economic feasibility.
In the ongoing 5th National Road and Local Road five-year preliminary feasibility study, changing from the existing suspension bridge to an undersea tunnel method has greatly improved economic feasibility compared to past studies.
The length of the Namhae-Yeosu Undersea Tunnel consists of a 4.2 km undersea tunnel section, a 1.73 km land tunnel, and a 1.37 km access road, totaling 7.3 km.
It is scheduled to open in 2029, with an estimated project cost of 631.2 billion KRW.
Currently, traveling from Namhae to Yeosu covers a distance of 80 km and takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Once the tunnel opens, the distance will be reduced to 10 km and the travel time to under 10 minutes.
Namhae County and Yeosu City will become a joint living area within 30 minutes, and the establishment of a U-shaped transportation network connecting the East Sea, Namhae, and the West Coast, along with the completion of the South Coast tourism district, is expected to have a tourism ripple effect.
Accordingly, the province is focusing administrative efforts to receive high scores at the policy evaluation and regional balanced development evaluation committee scheduled to be held by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in June.
The final results are expected to be announced in July after a comprehensive evaluation by the Korea Institute of Public Finance at the end of June.
