[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] The film "Crescendo" conveys the value of harmony through classical music, based on the true story of maestro Daniel Barenboim.
"Crescendo" depicts the story of young Israeli and Palestinian musicians who come together for a peace concert with the world-renowned conductor Eduard, overcoming deep conflicts to create a melody of harmony. It is drawing attention as a potential successor to the box office hits "The Last Quartet" and "Youth."
German character actor Peter Simonischek, who received acclaim for "Toni Erdmann," plays the conductor. Inspired by the true story of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra led by Daniel Barenboim, considered the greatest conductor of our time, the film movingly portrays how Israeli and Palestinian musicians, facing imminent danger, complete a beautiful harmony.
In particular, the most important factor in the members gradually overcoming prejudice and conflict and facing each other was music itself. United solely by music and joining the peace concert, they perform masterpieces by great composers such as Vivaldi, Bach, Dvo??k, and Pachelbel, showing the miracle of listening to each other's performances and harmonizing. The pain, turbulent emotions, and vibrant energy of young people from Israel and Palestine deeply resonate with the classical music melodies.
"The Last Quartet" (2013) also received great love as a meeting of classical music and legendary actors. It tells the story of life changes and conflicts faced by each member of the world-renowned string quartet Fuga, who have achieved excellent harmony for 25 years, after their cellist and mentor Peter is diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Featuring Academy-loved actors Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christopher Walken, and Catherine Keener, along with classical masterpieces, it remains a life-defining work for many.
The film "Youth" also demonstrated the strength of classical music films with its box office success. It stars Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel, and Jane Fonda, telling the story of the world-famous conductor "Fred," who, after announcing his retirement and going on vacation to a luxury hotel in Switzerland, refuses the queen's request to perform his signature piece, revealing a secret. World-renowned soprano Sumi Jo sang the theme song, attracting attention.
With the combination of acclaimed actors and classical music becoming a formula for box office success, all eyes are on whether "Crescendo" will continue the success of "The Last Quartet" and "Youth." It opens on June 24.
