[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Sang-hyun] Gimhae City in Gyeongnam announced on the 15th that it has signed a donation agreement with large-scale stores in the area regarding the increased commission fees for the sale of waste disposal bags (including food waste bands).
The city, noting that large-scale stores, which make up 5% of all sales points, account for 55% of bag sales volume, agreed with the companies to donate 50% of the increased commission fees.
The donation amount is expected to be 50 million KRW this year and approximately 550 million KRW over the next 10 years. The donated funds will be designated to Gimhae City through the Gyeongnam Community Chest of Korea and distributed to low-income groups in the region.
The stores participating in this donation include 20 locations such as Homeplus (Gimhae branch).
Representatives of the stores said, “Just as small streams gather to form a great river, we joined the donation with the hope that our small hearts can provide even a little help to neighbors in need.”
Mayor Heo Seong-gon said, “With the surge in online shopping due to COVID-19, offline stores are also facing very difficult circumstances, so I am truly grateful for the generous donation decision,” and added, “We will use the funds carefully for the low-income residents of the region.”
