Yeongdeungpo-gu Appoints the 3rd Resident Participation Group to Create a Women-Friendly City

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Chaehyunil) announced that the ‘3rd Citizen Participation Group,’ which will propose various opinions reflecting a women-friendly perspective and be responsible for monitoring and improving gender discrimination elements, will begin full-scale activities starting with the appointment ceremony on the 14th.

The ‘Women-Friendly City Citizen Participation Group’ has been actively engaged since its first activities in 2017, monitoring inconveniences in public institutions and multi-use facilities, checking the operation status of women’s safety houses, women’s safe return home route logo projectors, parcel lockers, and CCTVs, and promoting women’s safety, welfare, and empowerment.

In May, the district selected 45 members to serve as the 3rd Citizen Participation Group through open recruitment and recommendations, and held the appointment ceremony on June 14th at the annex auditorium of Yeongdeungpo-gu Office.

The appointed Citizen Participation Group will act as local experts for creating a women-friendly city until 2023, conducting resident opinion gathering and monitoring activities, and striving to build a women-friendly local culture and establish a women-friendly city.

As their first activity, they will form groups of two and conduct monitoring of 15 women’s safe return home routes and seven facilities including the Mamdeundun Center and Welfare Center.

The Citizen Participation Group will mainly perform roles such as ▲securing safety facilities like security lights, CCTVs, and emergency bells on return home routes ▲checking inconveniences during walking ▲serving as a communication channel for gathering improvement points and local residents’ opinions based on monitoring results.

Going forward, the district plans to conduct education and workshops to strengthen the gender-sensitive activity capabilities of the Citizen Participation Group and enhance the substance of monitoring, and continue multifaceted discussions to exchange opinions through regular meetings and discover monitoring improvement plans.

Meanwhile, since being designated as a ‘Women-Friendly City’ by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family in 2018, Yeongdeungpo-gu has been working under the vision of ‘A Women-Friendly City Yeongdeungpo-gu Made Together and Happy Together,’ focusing on expanding women’s participation in economic and social activities, enhancing community safety, and creating a family-friendly environment.

Yeongdeungpo District Mayor Chaehyunil said, “I look forward to the active role of the Citizen Participation Group, which will inspect inconveniences in the community from a gender-equal perspective and take the lead in creating a women-friendly environment,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to prepare various support measures so that Yeongdeungpo can become a city where women are happy and all citizens are respected.”
