[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] Kyodo News reported on the 14th that the Japanese government has launched an investigation to determine whether to impose anti-dumping duties on hot-dip galvanized steel wire imported from Korea and China.

According to the report, the Japanese Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced on the same day that they will begin an anti-dumping investigation following complaints from Japanese companies that hot-dip galvanized steel wire from Korea and China is being exported at unfairly low prices.

Hot-dip galvanized steel wire is used to make rockfall prevention wire mesh and other products.

Four Japanese companies, including Wire Techno, submitted a request to Japanese authorities in March to impose anti-dumping duties, claiming that Korean products are priced 20-30% lower and Chinese products 25-35% lower than domestic prices in Japan, causing damage.

The Japanese Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, which handle anti-dumping investigations, will conduct an investigation within one year and decide whether to impose anti-dumping duties based on whether damage has occurred to domestic industries.

The Japanese government currently imposes anti-dumping duties on two Korean products: potassium hydroxide (since August 2016) and steel pipe fittings (since March 2018).

It is also reported that the government will soon finalize the decision to impose anti-dumping duties on Korean potassium carbonate, which has been under investigation since June last year.

Kyodo News reported on the 8th that the Japanese government, which has been imposing a provisional anti-dumping duty of 30.8% on Korean potassium carbonate for four months since March this year, decided to apply this measure for five years after July.
