Nongshim Smiles at Eco-Friendly Baeksansu with No-Label and Lightweight PET Bottles...

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] Recently, Nongshim has been actively engaging in eco-friendly management by launching label-free Baeksansu and promoting lightweight PET bottles. This is because protecting nature allows us to enjoy the gift of Baeksansu for a longer time.

Since last month, Nongshim has officially started selling label-free Baeksansu through online channels and home delivery. Nongshim plans to expand sales to offline channels such as large supermarkets and aims to convert 50% of the total Baeksansu sales volume to label-free by the end of this year.

The label-free Baeksansu eliminates the hassle of removing labels after drinking, improving the convenience of waste separation and increasing the recycling rate of PET bottles. The reduction in label usage also contributes to resource savings. Nongshim expects to save more than 60 tons of label film annually with the label-free Baeksansu.

Instead of using labels, the label-free Baeksansu features the product name and water source engraved on the PET bottle, creating a simple design. Detailed product information is printed on the bundled packaging, and the product is sold only in box units.

Additionally, Nongshim is promoting the lightweighting of PET bottles. In December 2019, Nongshim reduced the plastic usage of the 0.5L Baeksansu product by about 13.5%. This year, Nongshim plans to apply lightweighting to the 2L product as well, reducing plastic usage by 4% compared to before. Nongshim expects to save more than 440 tons of plastic annually through PET bottle lightweighting.

Furthermore, Baeksansu is a natural water that considers the environment from the water intake process. Baeksansu contains water naturally springing from Naeducheon in Baekdusan. Unlike other waters that extract underground water using machines, which may harm nature during the intake process, Baeksansu does not pose such risks. Also, by connecting the water source Naeducheon to the production line 3.7 km away via a separate waterway, Baeksansu is produced without damaging the pristine forests of Baekdusan.
